The Slocan Valley’s Magic Theatre House
A local chapter of Kootenay history is about to be reopened….
The Slocan Valley’s Magic Theatre House was founded by local elder, David Orcutt in the late 1960’s. Built with help from the Canada Council and the local community to workshop ideas, Merges, Kalidofaires and other performance pieces that utilize multi-media and visual techniques including the World Sign Language, Symbolvision and shadow puppets created by David for a CBC children’s show in the late 1950’s.
Over the past 3 ˝ decades a multitude of artists have participated on different projects at the Theatre. Currently, Theatre Director/ Facilitator, Angela Jones is working with local performers, artists and students to create a performance art network at the learning space facility. Set in an idyllic location, The Magic Theatre House is nestled in the woods of a 130-acre land reserve. It’s walking distance to the Slocan River, retreat centers, and enroute to Vahalla Provincial Park, Slocan Lake, Idaho Peak, various hotsprings and Nelson.
